As promised via this post - here are three rare, never before published photos (I know I said I’d post one - but you did such an amazing job of spreading the Rocky and Tim love - I thought I’d add in a couple more!)
These photographs were taken during the original run at The Royal Court Theatre Upstairs. Note the original thigh tattoo didn’t include 4711 - but a pretty flower! Nawgh.

I agree. I honestly don’t think it could ever be done as well on film as it was originally. It’s all good fun to dress up and act it out yourself, that serves a different purpose, but I just really don’t think it’s necessary to do the film over. The real reason I really, really don’t want them to ever do a remake is just because I don’t want to deal with seeing it everywhere, because I wouldn’t want to see it at all. So really it’s just me being selfish. But I think anyone would agree that it couldn’t be done better, or even as well. I’m not saying it’s impossible, just very unlikely. If it ever does happen, I’ll eat my hat. ;)
Yes, AGREED; they have the play for souping it up and making it very theatrical, you know? Although Fowler did a great job as Frank I didn’t like that version of the play because they seemed to stray away from Sharman’s, Obrien’s and Blane’s visions too much. And that is what I’d be terrified for in a remake. Not only do they have to find someone to try and fill Mr Curry’s giant shoes - he set the bar so high you’d need to put them in a rocket to almost reach it - but they have to pick the rest of the cast with as much talent and chemistry (can I just say Pat and Richard here?) as the original. Nell was perfect because she WAS punk in the original and true sense of the word. The red hair was incongruous for the time and her “slips” and flashing the camera as much as possible, and her tapdancing on street corners… Then there are the cost-cutting corners which ADD to the movie, not DETRACT from it because it gives it more meaning: like having to break the wall in the lab because they forgot about a door and how Tim’s corset was from the last play he was in but it transformed from being a symbol of oppression in The Maids to one of sexual power and freedom in Rocky. How all the costumes were done by hand by Sue - she hand-sewed every sequin onto Tim;s costumes - and how half the movie was filmed in the deathtrap which was Oakley Court at the time. How Susan caught pneumonia from being in the rain for Over At The Frankenstein Place then dancing while sopping wet then having to swim in the pool. The fact that most of the cast were high as fuck while shooting and the extras were treated like shit which brought a bit of realism to all of Frank’s followers and groupies secretly resenting him. The way all of this corsetry and cross-dressing and being oddly attracted to it was SHOCKING at the time.The fact that the set was designed in a way which show’s Frank’s thought and the way he thought humans lived but got it slightly wrong.The way that the designers were inspired by their recent tours of Europe and referenced a famous painting on every set.
You can’t just REMAKE this shit in Hollywood. You can’t remake the history that the cast had together, in a tiny theatre in London where the show was to run for 3 weeks or so. You can’t REMAKE our love of the original, and I certainly don’t want new fans going around with the thought this new money-hungry, heartless reproduction is the superior.
